Definition: TBI is defined as an alteration in brain function, or other evidence of brain pathology, caused by an external force. This force may be accidental or deliberate, may result from a direct hit or blow to the head or from indirect acceleration/deceleration or blast forces, may penetrate the skull or leave it intact. Whatever the cause or mechanism, some degree of brain damage occurs which may range from 'minor/mild' to 'severe/critical'. The full extent of damage is not always immediately apparent. Life threatening complications can develop after 'mild' injuries. Mortality in patients with more moderate or severe injuries is high and life long disability is common in survivors.
